Patient Spotlight: Stacie Athon - A Journey of Resilience and Hope

This month, we are honored to share the journey of Stacie Athon, a remarkable woman whose story of resilience and hope embodies the spirit of our community.

The Beginning of a New Chapter

Less than three years ago, Stacie and her husband Cody were living a dream. Their wedding day marked the start of a beautiful life together, filled with endless possibilities and bright prospects. As a young couple in love, they looked forward to building a future filled with joy and happiness.

However, life took an unexpected turn shortly after their special day. Stacie, at just 34 years old, received a diagnosis that would change everything – a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer known as Triple Negative. For Stacie, who was in peak health and meticulously cared for her body, this diagnosis came as a profound shock. Her family, equally stunned, rallied around her as she faced this daunting challenge.

Battling the Odds

The journey ahead was far from easy. Stacie underwent 20 rounds of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, and 30 intense radiation sessions. Her determination and fighting spirit paid off when she was eventually declared cancer-free. It was a moment of triumph and relief, a testament to Stacie’s strength and the unwavering support of her loved ones.

But the battle was not over. Shortly after her remission, Stacie began to feel unwell once again. A return visit to her doctors brought devastating news: her cancer had come back with a vengeance. The aggressive nature and advanced stage of her cancer left her with no conventional treatment options.

A Ray of Hope

Refusing to accept this grim prognosis, Stacie and Cody continued to search for alternatives. Their perseverance led them to a doctor in California who offered hope beyond standard medical practices. Stacie began a rigorous treatment plan, attending sessions five times a week. Remarkably, she began to feel better than she had in four years, a testament to the efficacy of her new regimen.

Despite this newfound hope, the couple faced yet another hurdle – the financial burden of treatment. Stacie’s new therapy was not covered by insurance, placing an immense strain on their finances. However, their resolve remained unshaken. To combat the financial toxicity that threatened to undermine her recovery, Stacie launched the Stacie Strong Initiative, which has now become an official program under the SabesWings platform.

Stacie’s story is one of many that highlight the intersection of medical and financial struggles faced by cancer patients. At SabesWings, we understand that battling cancer extends beyond the physical and emotional toll; it often includes a daunting financial journey.
