Life Over Debt
In a world where everyone has their charity and purpose, philanthropy is the catalyst of hope, a way to fuel passions and create positive change. Each cause is meaningful, each donation a lifeline. But today, we ask you to turn your attention to a cause that is devastatingly urgent and heartbreakingly common: the 1985 Campaign through SabesWings.
Every day, we hear countless stories of cancer patients struggling not just with their illness, but with the insurmountable costs associated with fighting it. These are stories of people forced to choose between life saving treatments and staying in their homes, between battling cancer and avoiding crippling debt for their families.
Three weeks ago, we were approached by a young entrepreneur, her eyes filled with sorrow and regret. She had recently lost her aunt to cancer—a woman who had the opportunity to beat the disease. Her aunt's out-of-pocket costs for treatment, however, were beyond what she could afford each month. Faced with this harsh reality, she made the heart-wrenching decision to forgo treatment, choosing instead to spare her family from financial ruin. She gave up her chance at life to avoid becoming a burden, an unfathomable choice that should never have to be made.
The cost of life should not be a choice between medical care and financial ruin. It should not be a matter of calculating whether one can afford to live another month or preserve the family home. The cost of life should not force families to decide between bankruptcy and the health of their loved ones. Yet, these are the agonizing decisions faced by cancer patients and their families every day.
As SabesWings grows in its mission, we witness more and more of these unimaginable choices. Just yesterday, a 22-year-old son approached us, fighting desperately for his mother—a hardworking nurse who had already beaten cancer once, only to face it again. This brave woman now stands on the brink of losing a great deal of what she has fought hard to earn her entire life and her peace of mind. Her son, barely an adult, is doing everything he can to keep her going, to keep their lives from falling apart. And again, we ask ourselves, "Why are people having to choose between medical care and housing expenses?"
These stories are not isolated; they are a devastatingly common narrative in the lives of cancer patients. The financial toxicity of cancer is a reality that compounds the physical and emotional toll of the disease. Patients should be focusing on healing, not on how they will pay their bills. Families should be providing support, not calculating costs.
This is why we are asking for your support. By pledging to the 1985 Campaign, you can help us keep treatments flowing and roofs over our patients' heads. Your contribution can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who are fighting both cancer and financial ruin.
We invite you to share in our passion, to feel the urgency of our cause, and to make a pledge that will change lives. Help us ensure that no one has to make the unbearable choice between health and home. Together, we can provide the support that allows cancer patients to focus on what truly matters: beating the disease and reclaiming their lives.
